Maybe yâall shouldnât have let DOGE chainsaw the FAA, then.
Not to take any rightful criticism off of DOGE, but ATCs just have never properly recovered from Reagan getting pissy, and are still just not properly equipped.
It turns out that it takes more than 3 decades to recover from a radical right presidential administration.
It sucks that weâre gonna have to do it again now
We also have tooling from the 60s if Iâm remembering right. We could have spent money on airplanes not crashing at really any time.
This is a half truth. There are a lot of technologies from the 60âs to 80âs still in use as backups. At least for the enroute portion these are essentially backups for backups to ensure planes do not hit each other. Tech in towers is generally older overall since itâs much more costly to implement at every airport. Ultimately all this does is eat into the budget which could be used to hire more or pay better, but either likely go to other critical services anyway. Manpower is by far the biggest issue for controllers.
The answer is obviously force them to work without pay or face jail, right?
What does this even mean? How do you âclose certain parts of the airspaceâ?
Do you invoke NORAD to prevent airplanes from flying into certain portions of US air space? Do you NOTAM certain airspace as class G? Do you maintain the class so VFR canât fly through and have IFR avoid it? Do you put a TFR across the airspace?
Come on, dude. Be specific. FAA is DOT. You have the means to find someone who knows the correct words.
Because itâs a threat, not a safety measure
This is yet another loud chest beating to signal Republican incompetence
Doesnât feel like a threat. Feels like a scare tactic to people who donât know enough about how flying works.
There is no way in hell he gets away with physically shutting out other planes. NORAD is US + Canada. Canada is extremely unlikely to acquiesce, so heâll have to use unpaid American military. Because ICE is not building fast enough (ICE is his excuse to say, âsee? Iâm not using military on civilians!â), he relies on the military to keep a hold on the populace. If they become too disgruntled, he loses or at least greatly impedes his progress towards his desired control of the entire US government.
If he declares that towered airports are now class G, then airplanes are still able to land but at a greatly reduced rate
If he makes them into TFRâs, then heâll add time for planes to go around them.
His âthreatâ feels completely toothless.
It means the airports serving the area are shut down due to lack of ATC staff. You donât need to get into military no fly zones. All commercial traffic to those areas will go away by itself.
That doesnât mean anything. You can land at an airport without ATC. You can fly VFR. Itâs unusual for ATP because, well, it severely limits when and where you can fly. Doesnât mean itâs impossible. And if itâs a center and not an individual airport tower, you can probably fly IFR and cancel IFR when you get close to the airport and land under VFR.
Youâll still need fire trucks and such, but that shouldnât be federal to my knowledge.
Big commercial airlines are not going to do that. Sure, general aviation can. That doesnât matter for the parts of the system that affect the stock market.
There was a cargo plane (747? 737?) that flew VFR. Itâs not impossible but would greatly reduce the rate of arrivals/departures.
Itâs kind of unprecedented at where we are headed. I wouldnât expect them to do this normally, but desperate times may lead to desperate measures. Weâll see (even though I donât think air travel is a need)
If the airlines industry crashes though, our economy is royally fucked though so
The economy is 5 companies in an AI trenchcoat. Itâs already fucked.
Large commercial airlines already fly to untowered airports. Itâs not incredibly common, but it does happen.
If as others have said, it massively reduces the number of flights that can be handled at once; you almost certainly wonât see parallel landings at an uncontrolled airport, for example. But it wouldnât completely stop air travel.
Right, the scale is what matters here.
I didnât realize how shitty MSM reporting was until they reported on something I actually know a lot about. The half truths and ridiculous misrepresentations belie a lack of intellectual rigor bordering on unethical.
And someone is going to say, âBut thatâs not their role. Theyâre appealing to the masses and need to generalize.â I agree in our current system thatâs probably the best they can do, but it is not what a free press should or could be.
Just keep reminding anybody that blames the Democrats that itâs the Republicans who are in charge right now. No need to argue or go down any rabbit holes with them; just a gentle friendly reminder and move on.
But humiliating them is so much better
To be humiliated, one has to have a sense of being wrong. These people have a severely underdeveloped sense of right and wrong, and thus cannot be humiliated. If anything, you will just anger them and they will dig their heels in deeper. It is better for them to gently be reminded of the truth and let them naturally figure it out themselves (if they ever figure it out; which, admittedly, is a long shot).
Iâm watching Mikey Johnson lying right through his teeth about the shutdown. Itâs probably been a near-daily morning ritual for him.
Idiots that voted for Taco and moronic bothsiderists will probably eat up these lies or stupidly blame bOtHsIdEs. I hope itâs more, but Iâd be surprised if very many figure it out.
I donât think humiliation works on Nazis
Nazis are without shame.
This might actually affect some republican politicians. They must REALLY want health insurance premiums to go up.
Trump wants to remove medical debt exclusions from credit reports:

Trump wants to open forced labor internment camps for the unhoused: https://www.rawstory.com/trump-homeless/
It sucks for all the normal folks impacted by this, but being unable to travel for Thanksgiving might actually wake up enough people to the plight they voted for.
You know that all republicans (including redneck in trailer parks) are watching faux news 24h/24 where they talk about the horrible democrat shutdown, so they will remember to vote republican again.
Thereâs always a few that arenât, people who can be pried off of the leftward flank.
If you think there arenât then you might as well start advocating for the dissolution of the United States, because the experiment is over and itâs a failure.
I laughed in a co workers face when he told me it was âdemocrats fault that the government is shutdownâ these people are so fucking deluded they donât even bother looking at anything outside their bubble. He then told me that the Democrats are trying to fund âtransgender sex change operations in argentinaâ. They are literally flipping reality on its head they do not care for the truth only what media pundits feed to them.
Yep. They are getting their news from the ânewsâ networks that cannot even get the fucking name of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY right.
I donât hold out much hope for them to wake up, since these are also the people that are terrified of all things âwokeâ.
I fled a republican controlled hell hole because Iâm queer. Even if flying was in a normal situation I wouldnât be going back there anytime soon.
Iâm âluckyâ in that I havenât really been close to my family for a verity of reasons, but I have friends who are and it does suck for them.
Billionaires being unable to use their private jets does it even faster.
Let them
eat caketake Greyhound.Greyhound is not cake in this analogy, it would be a private jet.
Iâm all for it.
LOL⊠not even âthird worldâ countries do this.
If the shutdown continues into the days around Thanksgiving (specifically Wed/Sun when things are really busy), things will get really interesting.
If by interesting, you mean midair collisions.
i find aircraft accidents and incidents very interesting.
This might be a stupid question but Iâm not from the US so bear with me.
If your âgovernmentâ keeps not doing its job due to choosing to shutdown, how long until you decide this government isnât doing its sole task of governing and get rid of it and form another?
We elect our politicians on a set schedule, and keep our Executive and Legislative branches separate. So, the next opportunity to âform a new governmentâ is next November, when we re-elect the entire House and 1/3 of the Senate.
And keep in mind what this shutdown actually is. It is a failure to pass a law that appropriates money to government agencies. Not all government spending is subject to appropriations â in particular, Congress is still getting paid, because their salaries are not subject to yearly government appropriations.
Why canât these agencies just continue to spend money? Because Congress made it illegal to exceed appropriations. This shutdown is not a bug, itâs how our politicians have set things up, on purpose.
Yeah, itâs worth noting that the government shutdown is not budget related. The budget has already been passed. We know how much is going to be spent, and how it will be spent⊠This shutdown is because the appropriation was run separately, meaning the budget has passed but the various accounts for the budget have no money in them yet. The money already exists. It could be spent. But itâs not in the correct accounts, so the various agencies canât access it. Thus, those agencies are shut down.
Good explanation, thank you. Not at all what I expected.
In Canada if a budget vote fails, we call an election.
Third world country.
Even third world countries keep their airports operating. Failed state is probably better descriptor.
Isnât that an insult to several third world countries?
Donât you guys have
phonesprivate jets? These assholes keep trying to blame this on Democrats. I see Mikey Johnson standing there and brazenly lying about SNAP and healthcare, FFS.
Winning!
Map of affected areas:
(Good airspace is Red, bad airspace is Blue)
Oh do go on. Canât wait to see where this all ends up headingâŠ
Itâs heading nowhere according to Duffy.
All DoT members should be on strike. If theyâre not getting paid, why should the stooges in DC continue to get theirs?
Is anyone else sick to death of clickbait headlines?
Yes, me
However, this isnât really a clickbait title of hou ask me. From reading the article, this IS what the guy said, so this is fairly on point
I donât see âslammedâ, or âdestroyedâ or shit like that
Itâs click bait. Headlines used to feature the most important elements first.
Appropriate headline:
Government Shutdowns Threatens toâŠ
Yes, but how is this clickbait?
Not click bait:
Government Shutdown Threatens to limit navigable airspace.
The only point of the headline is to get you to click. News organizations exist to sell ads. They canât sell ads on an article you donât click on. Every headline is literally clickbait if you want to be pedantic about it.
That said, THIS headline is not what anyone would typically call clickbait. Itâs not asking a baiting question, burying a lede, or saying something thatâs arguably untrue just to get you in to the article. âA person of particular interest to X industry says thing that he believes to be true about said industry.â The headline assumes you know a few things, sure. But itâs not a scholarly article, itâs allowed to assume you know things.
Anyway⊠my solution is the better headline.
Itâs clearer.
And had the headline been mine, I wouldnât have clicked. And thatâs the point of headlines.
My job isnât to click when your job is to inform.
And yes â the other version buries the lead.
Please forgive that I started this. Itâs a demoralizing conversation.
The important piece of information from the article is the possible disruption to air traffic. That is stated clearly in the headline. The fact that she shutdown is causing it is a: pretty obvious given the state of the country right now and b: a reason to click the link if somehow you just crawled out from under a rock.
This is like, a textbook example of a good headline.
Youâre just wrong my guy. Itâs ok.
