Maa Ka Doodh: Uncovering A Nation’s Dairy Disaster is an investigative feature-length documentary film about the untold stories behind the success of India’s White Revolution – The World’s Largest Dairy Production and Development Campaign. It also explores the ethical, cultural, environmental, religious, economic, social, and political complexities the consumption of dairy in India has created since millennia. The film uncovers how India became one of the largest exporters of beef in the world and its direct link to the nation’s dairy industry, along with the negative impacts of this industry on India’s bovine population, public health, environment, and culture, with the aim of finding novel, sustainable and ethical solutions.

We find ourselves at an extraordinary juncture in human history. On one side, we hold within us the power to heal, regenerate, and transform, to co-create a just, compassionate, and sustainable future. On the other, we are facing unprecedented ecological and social crises: biodiversity collapse, chemical pollution, climate breakdown, chronic diseases, world hunger and widespread injustice.

The UK’s biggest high-end supermarket, Waitrose, recently announced a commitment to make all its own-brand pork products free range by 2027. Some of its products have switched to free-range this month.

In an updated release, the fast-food brand stated that it will continue to partner with Oatly and stock Oatly Baristamatic, but will also continue to offer dairy options.

Even among self-described “ecosocialists,” the lives of animals are often treated as an afterthought. We can, and must, do better.

Degrowth, a leading paradigm addressing our socio-ecological crisis, criticizes the highly destructive animal factory-farming industry. However, it does not challenge the commodification of sentient beings and the underlying system that perpetuates the oppression of the “less-than-human”. Animals-as-food, reduced to “flesh machines,” are exploited with institutional legitimacy rooted in societal belief systems. Drawing upon posthumanist and ecofeminist perspectives, this article argues that to achieve a just transformation, the degrowth proposal must gain ethical congruence and dismantle anthropocentric worldviews. Adopting an anti-speciesist framework becomes crucial to overcoming socio-ecological collapse, fundamentally reshaping our interactions with cohabiting individualities within the biosphere.

Mainstream vegan reading material is often written from a liberal rather than a radical perspective. By “radical” we mean a perspective that addresses the “root” of speciesism and human supremacy. While under capitalism, individual consumer choices do play a role in upholding speciesism and human supremacy, we also acknowledge the role industrial civilization itself plays in waging war against all animals – humans included!

If we find ourselves “apologizing” for other animals and our advocacy on their behalf, we need to ask ourselves why. Is it an expression of self-doubt? A deliberate strategy?
