Posted this 3 months ago when Iād thought things had gotten bad enough. Boy, was I wrong.
Seems there is no bottom.
Too bad itās missing her next line, itās another hard-hitter:
āWe think weāve come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, itās all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again.ā
I think about Earth Alliance President Clark a lot nowadays.
Thereās some really poignant lines about following illegal orders. If you like DS9 and donāt like whatās happening under the current US government I implore you to watch Babylon 5.
Spoilers, and the clip hits so much harder when youāve watched the build-up, but if you need convincing hereās a small sample about how topical this show still is.
If you really need convincing hereās one of the best speeches regarding invasion Iāve ever seen.
Trump definitely strikes me as the āgoes scorched earth when heās corneredā type. All the oligarchs do. There is no enlightenment at the end of their evil journey, only hatred and spite for having it ended.
I completely agree. His spectre will likely haunt us long after heās gone. Hatred and spite will be his legacy as well, so we have to do what we can to eradicate those symptoms.
Thanks for the reminder to watch Bab5. Itās been on the backlog for ages. Might be time.
Watch it. It will drag slightly a few seasons in but is still worth it. Then you get to see how it isnāt the same show at all. Also you get more memes!
Babylon 5 is hands down the best sci-fi tv show.
It hits hard with poignant reminders and leaves you laughing like a maniac at the same time. (The Hokey Pokey scene is legendary.)
It was a good show though it irks me that one of the major premises for the setting is that an advanced (later portrayed as wise) elder race just assumed some uncontacted aliens must have the exact same social norms they do and then initiated a genocide over a single incident with no further attempts at contact.
I ended up liking the Centauri simply because theyāre at least very relatable assholes who actually seem to appreciate alien cultures despite being an imperalistic society.
Watching now and the minbari do NOT come off as wise. They try really hard to look that way though. Reminds me of Japan tbh.
Theyāre basically like the elves in Tolkienās world: theyāre the elder race that is wise in a lot of ways, but also have a lot of flaws.
The Cemtauri are just white colonizers and itās not even subtle. E.g. ICE eating at a Mexican restaurant before arresting the staff or Southern slave owners banging their slaves.
Eh, best is subjective, mine changes often and I like that. Top Five (or at least ten) probably for the vasty majority if they see it, writing, acting and production are outstanding, concept rocks. As our society has been influenced, Star Trek (especially TOS & TNG) has the high ground IMO, and maybe thatās a good thing, hope is needed and B5 is not foremost that, itās a damn good story. If you like scifi TV and havenāt seen it, do, no ifs or buts.
I happen to be doing a rewatch currently and I am reminded to recommend The Lurkerās Guide to Babylon 5 as an accompaniment to your watch, it captures the 90ās internet fan experience brilliantly.
Iām a bit trek-curious (mostly because you nerds always pop up on my feed). Can I watch DS9 with little to no context?
Yes. There are a couple characters who show up that were introduced in Next Generation, but you donāt need to know them from that to appreciate them.
Absolutely!
Iām currently on my first watch of Babylon 5 and just finished season 2 yesterday. I didnāt check out the first clip for spoiler reasons but I agree about the second one with Londo.
Iām a bit jealous that you get to watch it for the first time haha. Season 2 & 3 are my absolute favorites, so enjoy!
Thank you! So far Iām liking it a lot.
I dont think watching something else is the action this post wants us to think about.
So should I have only responded by linking an assassination video? DS9 and B5 are closely linked for many reasons and B5 has an actual Earth v Earth conflict that mirrors our present day. Iām not sure how to respond to this comment except to ask; what did you find so lacking in my original response?
The call to action was to go watch something
I ask again; what did you want from my comment?
Yeah except youād be asking me this for the first time.
Just a simple link: https://dn720702.ca.archive.org/0/items/Simplesabotage/Simplesabotage.pdf
You donāt have to be Worf to help keep Star Trek in our future.
First, I did ask twice. I havenāt edited my comments so youāre free to reread them. Secondly, Iām not sure what I did to make you think I pissed in your Cheerios. Weāre on the same page. I never said you had to be Worf in this scenario as thatās completely unrealistic. I was sharing a similar show that included a multi year story line about resisting home grown fascism.
Iām sorry I didnāt pass your purity test while commenting in a science fiction community.
So youāre done learning? Cool, now step aside and be quiet while someone else learns something.
Thats a lot of words I didnt say
Thatās not even a lot of words. Am I talking to a bot?
Challenging politicians to a duel to the death is actually the official method of removing them under Klingon law. So clearly the lesson here is that the system works.
Iām pretty out of shape but I think I could probably beat Trump in hand-to-hand combat.
Take care, he may emit a cloud of noxious gas.
Isnāt that the case every time he speaks?
Or moves, apparently.
Heād be like a rhino, just keep him moving for a minute or two without stopping and heāll keel over.
āAny resemblance to real life situations or personalities is merely accidental.ā
Warf had honor
And many ships
ā¦but.. killing gowron didnāt save the empire tho.
What?
He removed corruption from the Klingon government after becoming Chancellor, and held the job for at least 5 years and was well regarded.. circa 2380.
The Klingon Empire continued for another 600 years until The Burn in the 31st century.
What kind of measure of success is this? A political action has to endure for all time or it failed?
Nb: for those of us who donāt enjoy Kurtzman Trek and dismiss it, its still going.
I bet dollars-to-doughnuts that if we offered @mskellymhayes.bsky.social a firearm for her to do the deed for us, she would wimp out and say violence isnāt the answer.
Push-comes-to-shove, Leftists are unwilling to commit violence, yet spread it as much as the Right does.
Violent rhetoric is how the Rightwing MAGA extremist dipshits gained power in the first place, but the differenceis that unfortunately they actually arent afraid to commit violence because they ALL have ZERO empathy.
Shooting Trump would do nothing to dismantle the system. There is a fundamental difference between libs whom think social ills are the fault of bad ideas or bad people and the left who look at the systems.
