I wanted to explain the structure of freedom, and why part of what constitutes a free society is the right to privacy. One of the most difficult parts of educating people on privacy is the confusion about what it actually is. People often confuse privacy with secrecy, privacy with anonymity, and privacy with security. I want to distinguish between multiple related terms and show the structure of how, in order to have a truly free society, you need the right to privacy.

I’m using e/OS on a fairphone 6 since some months. I would like to use Android Auto for long trips, though the official documentation tells me to install Google, Google Maps, Google Speech Recognition and then Android Auto.

If you connect to TOR proxy first and then connect to VPN you don’t expose your real IP to a VPN-provider and conceal the fact you’re using TOR (to prevent captchas on sites etc ). This way you could use any VPN (even free tear propriety) Am i right?

I see more and more apps and services requiring a selfie to proceed.

Many people argue you have to trade convenience in order to get privacy when it comes to cell phones in the technological world. But can we take a moment to appreciate just how much convenience you can obtain with a privacy-focused ROM I mean think about it, what makes a smartphone? The ability to make phone calls the ability to text message somehow, some way, as well as the ability to access the internet and properly GPS If your phone can do those things, it is absolutely a smart phone by all conceivable metrics.

I’ve been thinking about which is the better way to shop to maintain privacy. The way I see it there are pros and cons to each but I can’t decide which is ultimately better (and of course it depends on threat model and who you’re trying to hide from)

Recently got a pixel as a secondary work phone and was reminded that I actually kinda like android (my main is an iPhone). Problem is mostly that I don’t want an even higher level spyware device. Of course I could use graphene but I use Apple Pay, find my / AirTags regularly and I also would need to find good alternatives to iCloud, and photos which I honestly kind of like. I suppose I could possibly get a pixel watch and get around the pay limitations but maybe some users who have switches might have some general insight.

I recently switched to graphene os 🥳 but I am having trouble getting notifications from profiles other than the one currently open. Background running is enabled for the profile in settings, when I switch to it it is cleary still running, but I only then see any notifications from Apps there. I only have whatsapp running in that profile with play services. I have tried having someone send me a message, even after waiting for 15 minutes it doesnt show in the main profile.

I downloaded it from Aurora Store. I know I can download it from Github through Obtainium but I always run into problems if I use that method. Is FFF private like DDG?

I just realized that RT (dot com) is inaccessible when Mullvad is enabled, even with all content blockers turned off. It says the DNS lookup failed. I tried from various countries too.

I’m not that knowledgeable on networking, but I do remember that if a device is connected to a wired network, it can end up receiving packets not meant for it because switches will flood all the ports for packets they don’t know how to route. But I also heard that Wi-Fi is supposedly smarter than that and a device connected to it should never receive a packet not meant for it.
