"What the hell is the King of England doing here!?"

Explanation: In 1066 AD, three claimants rumbled for the English crown - the Anglo-Saxon Harold Godwinson, the Norman (French-Norse) William the Bastard, and the Norse (Norse-Norse) Harald Hardrada of Norway. All claimed to be the rightful successor of the previous king, who died with a… questionable succession. For that reason, all three claimants raised armies and decided the matter like civilized people - with FORCE!

Harold Godwinson, already being in England, moved north first to intercept Harald Hardrada’s army. Godwinson defeated Hardrada, who died in the ensuing Battle of Stamford Bridge. Then turning south to intercept William the Bastard’s army, he clashed with the Normans at the Battle of Hastings - which resulted in his death and defeat, and William becoming known as “The Conqueror.”

His victory would impose a new French elite over England which would ultimately change English customs and the English language itself, with French remaining the language of the English royal court (and legal system) up until the 15th century AD.
