During the Spanish Civil War, they took the opportunity to radically reorganize labor relations by their strength in the local trade unions, creating a rough confederation of democratic socialist communities.

However, around the middle of the war, they and the Trotskyists were purged by the Spanish Republic at the behest of the Soviet Union - who held the Spanish Republic’s gold reserves, sold them military equipment (at high prices), and gave marching orders to the Spanish Communist Party. This despite the fact that the war was very much far from won, but it was considered by the Spanish Republic that being entirely without Soviet assistance would lose the war.

While it would be difficult to make a sweeping statement like “Infighting lost them the war”, considering that wars are multifaceted things that can turn on a dime as much as grind past seemingly immovable obstacles, infighting sure as shit didn’t help.
