Not quite a utopia, but a functioning society at the least!

Explanation: During the Spanish Civil War, one of the major factions aligned with the pre-war democratically elected socialist republican government of Spain was the anarchists, or libertarian socialists if one prefers, who were especially strong in the region of Catalonia. During the Spanish Civil War, they took the opportunity to radically reorganize labor relations by their strength in the local trade unions, creating a rough confederation of democratic socialist communities.
However, around the middle of the war, they and the Trotskyists were purged by the Spanish Republic at the behest of the Soviet Union - who held the Spanish Republicâs gold reserves, sold them military equipment (at high prices), and gave marching orders to the Spanish Communist Party. This despite the fact that the war was very much far from won, but it was considered by the Spanish Republic that being entirely without Soviet assistance would lose the war.
⊠the Spanish Republic would go on to lose the war against the fascists, making the purge pointless as well as immoral. While it would be difficult to make a sweeping statement like âInfighting lost them the warâ, considering that wars are multifaceted things that can turn on a dime as much as grind past seemingly immovable obstacles, infighting sure as shit didnât help.
